8D Report

The occurrence of failures in supplier components is a serious problem for just-in-time production of vehicles or systems. In order to avoid long-term production stops while suffering a failure, promising and feasible immediate measures have to be prepared and taken promptly. The 8D report serves as a quick reactant for the failure detection and elimination. The 8 steps for processing the 8D report are:

D1 – Compiling the team
D2 – Describing the problem
D3 – Defining immediate actions
D4 – Determining the root causes
D5 – Planning the corrective actions
D6 – Implementing the corrective actions
D7 – Preventing failure recurrence
D8 – Recognizing the team's efforts

A unification of the problem solving steps and of the associated documentation by means of an 8D report leads to an increased efficiency and to traceability of the troubleshooting process. An effective cooperation between the manufacturer and the principal is essential and is encouraged by the process.
